I was born and raised in Houston, TX and spent time in Austin, TX completing my undergraduate degree before moving out to West Texas for my medical education. I have an interest in working with underserved populations and aiding individuals to become the best version of themselves. I truly believe that in order to effectively treat a patient, you must not only be well versed in knowledge about the illness, but also the person who has the illness as well. In my spare time, I enjoy social gatherings, being active outdoors, live music, photography, and painting. I am excited to continue on my journey in the field of psychiatry to make a positive difference in the lives of those around me.
Meet Our Residents
Sendhil Raj Karmegam, M.D
I graduated medical school from PSGIMS&R, Coimbatore, India. I started practicing in a rural health center, where I understood that the importance of mental health is often ignored and stigmatized. The process of rendering mental health services kindled a curiosity about the human mind and body. I completed Psychiatry residency at the same medical university in India, with an aim to create awareness and deliver accessible mental health services to people in need. A global training at TTUHSC is an opportunity for me to understand the bio-psycho-social factors in the community and I look forward to pursue my interest in Mood disorders research. I enjoy playing chess and cricket with friends. My curiosity in astrophysics keeps me in awe with new discoveries emerging every day and ponder about life.
Nadeem Mian, M.D.
I was born and raised in Pakistan. Growing up, I had a strong desire to pursue a career
in medicine, driven by a deep seated passion for helping others. This led me on an
incredible journey to the Philippines, where I embarked on my medical education. I
had a deep fascination with the human mind and a desire to understand the complexities
of human behavior. This passion led me to pursue a career in medicine with a specific
focus on psychiatry.
I had an exceptional opportunity to be a part of psychiatry training in Washington
state. Working closely with mentors, I witnessed the transformative impact they had
on their patients' lives. I was captivated by the ability of psychiatrists to help
individuals struggling with mental health conditions find hope, healing and a path
towards recovery.
There were several compelling reasons behind my decision to choose Texas Tech University
Health Sciences, Permian Basin for my residency training. Firstly, Texas Tech has
a renowned psychiatry department with faculty members who are experts in their field.
Psychiatry program here has a comprehensive curriculum and diverse clinical experiences
that promise to provide me with a strong foundation in psychiatry. Furthermore, its
commitment to research and innovation aligned perfectly with my own aspirations to
contribute to the advancement of psychiatric knowledge and treatment modalities. My
future goals are to pursue a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry and possibly
addiction psychiatry.
I enjoy watching movies, reading books, playing supports and spending time with family and friends.

Greetings! I am a highly motivated psychiatry resident who received my medical degree from Dow Medical College in Pakistan. When I first traveled to the United States as a medical student, I was thrilled and inspired by the amazing quality of medical training and technologies in the US healthcare system which inspired me to pursue my career in the United States after graduation.
With a compassionate and inclusive approach, I aim to create a safe space for my patients to heal. I have a particular interest in cultural mental health and am committed to providing culturally sensitive care to all my patients.
In my free time, I love exploring the outdoors, experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen, and enjoying music and movies. With my exceptional training and passion for psychiatry, I am excited to contribute meaningfully to the field.
Miriam Shayeb, M.D.
I was born and raised here in the Permian Basin, where I first became interested in a career in medicine. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from Rice University in Houston, TX, before returning to West Texas for my medical education at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. In medical school, I developed an interest in psychiatry and appreciated the specialty’s unique consideration of patients’ individual stories and multimodal approaches to treatment. I am grateful for the opportunity to pursue my psychiatry residency training here at TTUHSC at the Permian Basin and to serve the community that has been an integral part of my life. Within psychiatry, my clinical and research interests include consultation-liaison psychiatry and women’s mental health. In my free time, I enjoy cooking for my friends and family, watching mystery series, reading nonfiction, and traveling.
Praveen Vodala, M.D.
Youngest of a band of four brothers, I was always fascinated by human biology and genetics, which put me on a path to medical school. Having completed medical school and psychiatry residency in India, I embarked on a journey to expand my expertise in psychiatry by pursuing further specialization in the United States. Recognizing the unique challenges and complex nature of addiction, I was drawn to the advanced research, cutting-edge treatment modalities, and collaborative opportunities available in the American healthcare system.
When not immersed in the world of psychiatry, I find solace and joy in the creative pursuits of cooking, singing, and traveling. I find cooking to be a therapeutic and meditative process, where I can express my creativity and nourish both body and soul. Whether it's exploring new recipes or reimagining traditional dishes, my love for culinary adventures knows no bounds. Singing allows me to express emotions, find solace, and connect with others on a deep, emotional level. Also, I believe that traveling broadens horizons, fosters empathy, and enriches my perspective on life. Exploring new landscapes, immersing in diverse cultures, and connecting with people from different walks of life invigorate my spirit.
Malathi Pergula, MD
I was born and raised in the southern part of India, and I graduated from MNR Medical College. My passion for psychiatry sparked when I started working as a primary care physician in India, where I realized the superstition and stigma regarding psychiatric illnesses deeply rooted in my patients' communities. Over time, I've gained a diverse spectrum of clinical and research exposure in the United States, propelling me toward becoming a highly proficient psychiatrist. I am immensely grateful for the chance to train within the Texas Tech Psychiatry residency Program at Permian Basin. I’m sure this program would provide me with a supportive and collaborative environment, invaluable mentorship, and a comprehensive approach to psychotherapy. I am particularly interested in geriatric psychiatry and women’s mental health and am committed to providing the best possible care to my patients. My paramount focus is to balance my professional endeavors and family life. I am fortunate to have a supportive network of loved ones who enable me to do so. Beyond work, I relish spending quality time with my family, indulging in the joys of cooking, and engaging in meaningful activities that forge enduring memories. I am excited about the journey ahead and confident in my ability to positively impact my patients' lives. With top-notch training and mentorship from the faculty members, alongside my skills, determination, and commitment, this program will sculpt me into a skilled psychiatrist.

I graduated from Al-Nahrain University School of Medicine in Iraq, where I completed my Internal Medicine Board training before I move to the US. I have chosen to pursue psychiatry for both humanitarian and scientific reasons, it is one of the earliest specialties of medicine and the most evolving and progressing. I got an exceptional opportunity to join psychiatric training in Washington state, where I expanded my psychiatric knowledge, learned how to address the mental health concerns of vulnerable patients. My psychiatric clinical research experience reinforces my interest in psychiatry. This revived my interest in psychiatric research and my curiosity about the relationship between the body and mind. Joining Texas Tech University Health Science Center- psychiatry residency is an exceptionally unique opportunity that will enable me to be a well-rounded physician, psychiatrist, and human being. I enjoy spending time with my family, playing sports, reading, and listening to music.
Timothy Chao, M.D.
I am Timothy Chao. I chose this program because I want to give back to the school that has given me a bachelors degree as well as medical degree. I spend a lot of time volunteering with fostering cats and getting outdoor cats fixed. Other things I enjoy are board games and video games. My favorite music is kpop. This is a relic of medical school because my inability to understand the lyrics allowed me to focus on studying.
Mudasar Hassan, M.D.
