Application Process

The Department of Psychiatry only accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Information about the service may be obtained from your Dean's Office or from the American Association of Medical Colleges(AAMC). International medical graduates may obtain information about ERAS through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Application Requirements

  1. Applications are only accepted through the ERAS program. No faxes, mailed and/or emailed applications will be accepted.
  2. USMLE scores of 220 or higher are preferred but not required. It is required that applicants have no more than three attempts per step over a seven year period.
  3. US clinical experience is preferred but not required.  It is strongly preferred to have at least 6 month of US clinical Psychiatry experience. Having completed step 3 is preferred.
  4. It is preferred that applicants graduation from medical school be within the last five years but this is not required.
  5. TTUHSC policy mandates that only J-1 visas be sponsored for physicians in training. TTUHSC will accept EAD and green cards.
  6. Applicants must be eligible for a physician in training permit issues by the Texas Medical Board (TMB). To review the requirements for a physician in training permit, you may visit the TMB website. Information for training permits can be found in the section on Physicians in Training (PIT).
  7. All applicants must be ECFMG certified at the time they apply through ERAS. If applicants are not ECFMG certifies when they apply though ERAS their application will be withdrawn from the review process. A completed application must be submitted no later than October 31, 2023.
  8. Our program participates in the National Resident Match Program and does not pre-select or offer pre-match positions.
  9. Applications should submit the following documents through ERAS:
    1. ERAS Application
    2. Medical School Transcripts
    3. USMLE Test Results
    4. Dean's Letter
    5. Three (3) Letters of Recommendation
    6. Personal Statement
    7. CV
  10. The PGY level requested should be clearly specified.

    Curriculum Vitae (CV) and letters should fully account for the time since medical school graduation.

    Candidates requiring visa sponsorship should provide specific information in their application.

Application Deadline

Application deadline for Academic Year 2024-2025 is October 31, 2023. Applications will not be accepted after this date. 

Resident Selection Process

The Department of Psychiatry has established a resident recruitment committee to assist with the initial screening of resident applicants for interview, as well as candidate selection for training, through the National Residency Matching Program, based on each applicant's cumulative evaluations. Members of the committee include the Program Director and selected faculty and residents.

Interview Process

We try provide a comprehensive yet enjoyable Interview Day. You will meet with our faculty, and get to know our community. A standard quantitative scoring system is employed in the assessment of each candidate's qualifications, based on the information provided with their application, as well as that obtained through the interview. Clarifying qualitative comments are added as needed. Candidates will be given a tour of the clinic and hospitals as time permits. You will have plenty of opportunities to ask questions about our program.

Rank Order Process

Evaluation scores, as well as, qualitative evaluator input are tallied and reviewed by the residency recruitment committee. The committee meets two weeks prior to the deadline for submission of a rank order list to the National Resident Matching Program. Applicants are ranked through the combined input of committee members.
