Medical School Programs
The M.D. Program
As a TTUHSC medical student, you have the freedom to pursue any discipline or specialty. Our four-year MD program devotes three years to a dynamic, foundational blend of basic science, research and interdisciplinary clinical practice, followed by a final year of clinical specialization. It’s a curriculum that’s both deep and wide, and empowers students to advance the health care environment for a healthier society, all while continuing to pursue their individual interests in the field. Students will have many opportunities for clinical experiences starting in the first year through formal class work and mentoring by our visionary practicing physicians.
The Family Medicine Accelerated Track
We are deeply committed to advancing primary care at TTUHSC. This dedication led us to pioneer the nation’s first accelerated Family Medicine program, which remains one of our signature offerings. Our goal is to increase the number of medical students choosing a career in family medicine--especially in underserved areas--providing our invaluable, patient-centered care to those who need it most. Students pursuing a career in Family Medicine can apply for this three-year program during their first year of medical school.

Dual Degree Programs
For students interested in interprofessional careers and leadership positions that extend beyond patient care, we offer a number of popular dual degree programs in partnership with other TTUHSC schools and with Texas Tech University. These visionary programs combine elements of expertise in other fields with the ever-changing health care community, providing a wealth of new opportunities.
- MD/MBA (Health Organization Management)
- This joint degree program allows students to earn both MD and MBA degrees within the four years of medical school. Degrees in health organization and management allow students to excel in careers as healthcare executives and healthcare administrators. Individuals who want to change the way healthcare is delivered might be interested in this unique path.
- MD/PhD
- This dual degree program enables students who are interested in a career in academic medicine as a physician scientist to achieve future positions in academic and medical fields. Medical practitioners and faculty members at university medical centers work with and instruct medical and graduate students. Individuals with this medical degree are also involved in innovative biomedical research.
- MD/JD
- The MD/JD dual degree program of study is administered by the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine and Texas Tech University School of Law. An exceptional opportunity for those who wish to master excellence in both fields, this six-year program provides the tools required for a endeavors in health law, health care policy, bioterrorism, forensics or biomedical compliance.
- MD/MPH
- This visionary combined degree is a medical school program that incorporates a master of public health, empowering students who are interested in approaching complex issues from a population perspective. Our students will use evidence-based solutions to improve health outcomes for communities and individuals, and conduct and communicate research that informs the diverse fields within public health.
Residency Programs
The goal of graduate medical education (residency training) is to become certified by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) to practice in a medical/surgical specialty and fulfill requirements for full, unrestricted licensure in the state of Texas. The Texas Tech residency programs are developed in the context of the Physician General Competencies as expressed by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Fellowship Programs
The Texas Tech GME Fellowship programs provide advanced education in a medical/surgical subspecialty to allow a fellow to acquire competency with sufficient expertise to act as an independent consultant in the focused field of study. Texas Tech has both ACGME-accredited and Professional Organization approved programs leading to ABMS certification, added qualification, and advanced credentials.
Certificate
- Medical Humanities
- For those interested in the human side of medicine, TTUHSC offers a certificate in Medical Humanities. This program within the school of medicine is a four-year track designed to foster a deep scholarly understanding of and personal appreciation for the role of humanistic medicine over a four year course of medical education.
Continuing Education
- Continuing Medical Education
- TTUHSC offers a continuing education degree that serves the continuing medical education needs of practicing physicians and others on the healthcare team. These physicians include faculty and community physicians in Lubbock and the surrounding region including the South Plains and Panhandle of Texas. This program is an opportunity to plan education that changes competence and performance in medical school classes and medical school programs.
