Residency Program - Rural Surgery Track

The Department of Surgery at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas offers interested applicants enhanced training to better prepare for rural general surgery practice. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock serves the predominantly rural region of West Texas. The program is based in Lubbock, Texas, home to a community of a quarter of a million people, with a million more scattered through rural communities of the region. This service population is large enough to generate a wide variety of clinical rural experience.

The Department of Surgery offers a five-year ACGME accredited General Surgery Residency Program graduating five Chief Residents per year, with one resident per year designated as the rural track. Clinical rotations are based at the University Medical Center with additional rotations at Covenant Medical Center, as well as the TDCJ Montford Hospital, all in Lubbock, Texas. We are the primary referral center for surrounding rural medical practices; in addition, UMC is the designated level I trauma center and verified burn center for West Texas.

The rural general surgery track resident will have additional time dedicated to endoscopy, interventional radiology, obstetrics & gynecology, otolaryngology, and urology, in order to gain additional skills in these important areas.

In addition, they will have the opportunity to spend time in rural surgery rotations, to experience surgical practice in a rural setting first-hand.
