Community Health Worker Training Program

What is a Community Health Worker or Promotor(a)?

  • A Community Health Worker (CHW) is a trusted member of the community, and has a close understanding of the ethnicity, language, socio-economic status, and life experiences of the community served
  • Acts as a liaison and provides cultural mediation between healthcare, social services, and the community
  • Helps people increase access to needed services and resources
  • Builds individual, community, and system capacity through health knowledge and self-sufficiency
  • Provides social support, advocacy and clinical research 
  • Provides services through outreach, patient navigation, community health education and information

Who can become a Community Health Worker?

  • Anyone who wants to make an impact in their community
  • Anyone who is interested in receiving a certification from the State of Texas
  • Anyone who has a; 
    • Texas Residence 
    • High School Diploma or GED
    • Must pass a criminal background check

What is involved?

Core CHW Training 
  • Interactive course that meets the TX DSHS required eight core competencies for CHWs
  • Sixteen-week commitment
    • 40 hrs. per week includes:
      • One Zoom class
      • Online learning via LMS
      • 30 hrs. Service Learning 
    • Must have access to technology (ex: laptop, iPad, etc. & reliable internet)
  • Apply for CHW Training
CHW Apprenticeship Program
  • Includes core CHW training
  • One-year commitment
  • Paid on the job learning
    • 40 hrs. per week (includes required coursework; 2000 hrs. total)
  • Registered through the Department of Labor
