Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month

The TTUHSC Garrison Institute on Aging Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month, an annual campaign occurring in November, holds particular significance due to its alignment with the declaration made by U.S. President Ronald Reagan in 1983. President Reagan designated November as National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month with the aim of fostering awareness and catalyzing action against Alzheimer's disease, which stands as the most prevalent cause of dementia among older adults.

This campaign takes on greater urgency in light of statistics presented by the Alzheimer's Association's 2022 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures report. This report indicates that an estimated 6.5 million Americans are grappling with Alzheimer's disease in the year 2022, constituting 10.7% of individuals aged 65 and older. Alarmingly, projections suggest that this number will surge to 12.7 million Americans aged 65 and older by the year 2050.

In the state of Texas, the impact of Alzheimer's disease is poised to be particularly profound, with projections indicating a staggering 22.5% increase in the number of individuals aged 65 and older with Alzheimer's dementia. Moreover, the disease ranks as the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, assuming an even more prominent position as the fifth leading cause of death among individuals aged 65 and older.

The TTUHSC Garrison Institute on Aging Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month serves as a platform to confront these daunting statistics, rallying communities, healthcare professionals, caregivers, and individuals alike. By disseminating accurate information, dispelling myths, offering support, and fostering research, this campaign strives to inspire collective action in the fight against Alzheimer's disease and to ultimately improve the quality of life for those affected by this relentless condition.
