TTUHSC – SOP continued to rank in the upper one-third of the nation’s accredited colleges and schools of pharmacy in research funding during 2008. The School ranked 27th among the nation’s pharmacy schools in the percentage of Ph.D.-level faculty who are funded by the National Institutes of Health and 35th in total NIH funding. SOP researchers also ranked 19th in obtaining research funding from non-NIH entities in 2008 and their combined NIH and non-NIH research funding ranked 32nd.
The SOP continued to support the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health by contributing $25,000 toward the grants awarded through LWBIWH. The School also provided more than $321,500 in support to SOP investigators through internal grant funding and donated $12,500 to the Entrepreneur Alliance of Amarillo, a non-profit consortium that allows the SOP faculty with biotech research/ideas the opportunity to maximize collaborative endeavors.
In 2001 TTUHSC-SOP established a grant program that resulted in the development of three centers for research excellence during its first three years: The Center for Cancer Biology Research, The Center for Pathophysiology and Treatment of Stroke and The Pediatric Pharmacology Research and Development Center.
A fourth research center—The Center for Immunotherapeutic Research and Development—was established in 2007 as part of the School’s expansion into Abilene. In 2008 The Center for Pathophysiology and Treatment of Stroke was reorganized as The Vascular Drug Research Center to take advantage of several important collaborations that developed over recent years between the labs of several SOP investigators.
