The Community
The Department of Anesthesiology of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) is located in Lubbock, Texas. In the heart of West Texas; rich agricultural region, Lubbock is a growing educational, commercial, medical, and cultural center. The metropolitan population, in excess of 250,000 residents, lives in mild seasonal conditions with an average of 267 days of sunshine per year. With eight hospitals and no less than 85 health care clinics, Lubbock is known as the medical center for West Texas and Eastern New Mexico
Lubbock's entertainment possibilities range from major theatrical touring companies, to weekend rodeos, to exhibits at the museum of Texas Tech University. The city maintains a symphony orchestra, ballet company, civic chorale and numerous community theaters. Regional outdoor activities are limitless with only short drives from the city. Depending on the direction of the excursion, residents can enjoy desert terrain sports, inland lake activity, or seasonal mountain adventures. New Mexico ski resorts can be reached in less than a five hour drive.
The Department of Anesthesiology offers a four year program beginning with internship. Physicians enter the residency training program in the department of Anesthesiology in an internship (PGY-1) position. Our internship position may be entered after having successfully completed an accredited medical school. We offer a one year internship (PGY-1) in conjunction with the Texas Tech Department of Internal Medicine. It consists of rotations through the Medical ICU, Neuro ICU, Inpatient Medicine Service, ER, as well medical subspecialties.
The fully accredited residency program in Anesthesiology provides training in all areas of pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, general surgery, otolaryngology, and cardiovascular surgery. Emphasis is on training the complete anesthesiologist to be prepared to enter clinical and academic practice. As of recent, residents have performed well on the ABA examination process to become board certified and have secured excellent positions after completion of residency training at TTUHSC, In fact, some of our residents have been recognized as being in the top 10% in scoring on the ABA BASIC exam.
The department is small, friendly, and dynamic. It is able to give special attention to valued residents. The department has a history of providing capable anesthesiologists to the work force and is rapidly developing momentum in becoming a nationally and internationally acclaimed research center in the future

The four year residency is devoted to training physicians to become outstanding anesthesiologists. In the first year, residents develop basic anesthesia skills by assisting on routine cases under close faculty supervision in the general operating room. During the second and third years subspecialty training is offered in OB anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, cardiovascular anesthesia, neurosurgical anesthesia, regional anesthesia, and pain management.
The Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center - Lubbock accepts 4 residents per year. Our hospital, University Medical Center, performs the full spectrum of clinician care includes Trauma and Burn.
We are able to provide Friday as a didactic day for the residents with no Operative Room duties, which is unique for our program, allowing our residents to have enough didactic time as well as participate in scholarly activity and present work at national meetings.

Facilities
The majority of training takes place at the University Medical Center (UMC) and Covenant Hospital. UMC is adjacent to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas and while Covenant Hospital is located within a two mile radius of the medical district.
University Medical Center is the primary teaching hospital for the School of Medicine at Texas Tech University HSC. UMC is a 495 bed facility operated by the Lubbock County Hospital District. University Medical Center houses the West Texas perinatal center and the regional burn center. UMC is the first hospital in Texas to receive a Trauma One designation. Subspecialty care capabilities of the faculty and staff make the hospital a focal point of tertiary care for West Texas and the surrounding states. University Medical Center is a JCAHO accredited hospital which has 19 operating rooms, 18 labor and delivery rooms and 3 Obstetrical OR suites. UMC also offers a 8 bed Day Surgery Center for outpatient procedures. In the newly built West Tower in addition to the Labor and Delivery facilities there is also a state of the art Endoscopy Suite. The anesthesiology resident also has the opportunity for intensive care training in the 20 bed Surgical, 30 bed Medical, 20 bed Cardiac and the 14 bed pediatric Intensive Care Units.
Covenant Hospital located in Lubbock, TX has an agreement to allow CA-2 and CA-3 residents to rotate there for one month. This rotation is intended to allow for a greater exposure of neuroanesthesia and pediatric anesthesia.
Case Experience
All residents exceed RRC minimum standards, and in most categories exceed 1.5-4 times the RCC procedure requirements.
