The Pediatric Residency Program at TTUHSC's Amarillo campus is a tight-knit community of physicians with a big mission to train confident and compassionate pediatricians who deliver evidence-based and family-centered care for a diverse pediatric population in an open learning environment. Our community of pediatricians, both generalists and specialists, provide one-on-one guidance to our residents providing unique educational opportunities for them. The residents receive multiple exposures to procedures and inpatient/outpatient experiences that enhance their clinical acumen.

Serving the Texas Panhandle

Having recently grown to 7 residents per year, TTUHSC’s Pediatric Residency serves the Texas Panhandle and surrounding areas in New Mexico, Kansas, and Oklahoma. The land area is over 25,000 square miles with a population of nearly 500,000. Residents are presented with patient encounters on a primary care basis rather than seeing tertiary cases with pre-existing diagnosis. The residents are also exposed to multiple subspecialty areas in the inpatient and outpatient setting. The residents  have unique exposure to children with special healthcare needs as several general faculty take care of this subset of patients. Our residency provides a very strong core education in general pediatrics.

There are more than 30 faculty who oversee the training of residents in the areas of patient care, medical knowledge, interpersonal/communication skills, professionalism, practice-based learning, and systems-based practice. Education is led by the Associate Program Directors Dr. Johnnie Faircloth, Dr. Anders Leverton, and Dr. Spencer Pruitt and co-chief residents Dr. Linah Omer, Dr. Abigail Batson, and Dr. Preetha Kandaswamy. This team advocates strongly for the residents’ well-being and overall experience. At TTUHSC, we strive to create a team of residents that function at a very high level. In order to do this, we provide a strong educational structure including a block lecture series with a two-year curriculum, quarterly test curriculum and multiple hands-on skills labs. We also provide team building and professionalism lectures as well as teaching and leadership seminars to promote strong, collaborative working relationships.
