Our Masters of Athletic Training Program
The mission of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, School of Health Professions' Master of Athletic Training (MAT) program is to provide a high quality, interprofessional, and evidence-based education to build a strong foundation for a career in athletic training. The MAT program is one of recognized excellence that prepares athletic trainers who demonstrate academic and professional citizenship, make significant contributions to the profession through patient care and a commitment to learning, and improve the health of individuals and communities.
Our curriculum exceeds the minimum standards expected of students entering the athletic training profession. It is our goal to provide the very best environment and experience to our students, enabling them to become competent, confident, and enthusiastic members of the athletic training profession.
The MAT program is a 60-semester credit hour entry-level program over the course of two years. The program is accredited by Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) and designed to prepare students to meet national and state requirements to practice athletic training.
After graduating from the MAT program, students must pass the Board of Certification, Inc. (BOC) exam and/or meet the requirements of individual states, to practice athletic training. Additional credentialing requirements for athletic training vary from state to state according to athletic training practice acts and state regulations that govern athletic training. A FELONY OR MISDMEANOR CONVICTION MAY AFFECT A GRADUATE’S ABILITY TO SIT FOR THE BOC EXAMINATION OR ATTAIN STATE LICENSURE.
Students in the MAT program come from a variety of backgrounds and educational experiences. The MAT program has students from all over the United States and International students.
The program provides students exposure to a variety of learning environments and experiences. Including:
- traditional classroom work
- laboratory time to practice learned skills
- clinical experiences (including immersive experiences) in a variety of clinical settings that integrate classroom and lab work into practice (e.g., college, high school, outpatient clinic, physician's office, etc.)
- interprofessional education opportunities and shared courses
Alumni of the MAT program work in a variety of practice settings across the country. Examples include: professional sports (NFL, NBA, MLS, MLB), colleges (large and small), secondary schools, outpatient clinics, physician’s offices, and performing arts (Cirque du Soleil).
Representation of Status with the Commission
The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award baccalaureate, masters, doctoral, and professional degrees. The commission should be contacted only if there is evidence that appears to support the institution's significant non-compliance with a requirement standard.
A member of the Texas Tech University System, TTUHSC has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges as a separate institution from Texas Tech University since 2004. TTUHSC received its reaffirmation of accreditation from SACSCOC in 2009. The next reaffirmation is scheduled for 2019.
