A team of researchers led by Hongjun (Henry) Liang, Ph.D., from the Texas Tech University
Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) Department of Cell Physiology and Molecular Biophysics,
recently investigated whether or not a series of novel nanoparticles can kill some

Prototype Fund Awards, a partnership between the Innovation Hub at Research Park at
Texas Tech University and the Lubbock Economic Development Alliance (LEDA). These

TTUHSC Faculty Members Find Disparity in Asthma Hospitalizations
A recent study shows there is a health disparity within Lubbock County.
The study, conducted by Public Health at Texas Tech University and the College of
Osteopathic Medicine at Sam Houston State University, shows there were high asthma
hospitalizations for people who lived in certain areas of Lubbock.
Duke Appiah, associate professor at the Department of Public Health at Texas Tech
Health Sciences, said the groups analyzed data from the Texas Health and Human Services
Inpatient Public Use Data File for years 1999-2018.
“Our health outcomes are not equally distributed in all regions in Lubbock,” said
Appiah. “There are some regions who tend to seem to have a higher risk for disease
than other regions, and we need to pay more particular attention to trying to understand
why some regions have more diseases than others.”

Faculty Member Receives Chancellor's Council Distinguished Research Award
Dr. Das, Pharmaceutical Sciences, has been announced as a winner of the prestigious
Chancellor's Council Distinguished Teaching and Research Award. Established in 2001,
these awards are given to individuals who exemplify teaching or research excellence
throughout the year. These are the highest honors given by the Texas Tech University
System to faculty members at its component institutions. Winners of these awards have
significantly advanced teaching or research efforts and are noted as leaders among
colleagues and in their respective fields.
Additionally, Dr. Das was recently elected Fellow of American Heart Association (FAHA)
conferred by the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences (BCVS), and inducted into
the Arthritis, Connective Tissue and Skin (ACTS) Study Section, NIH, as a ‘Chartered
Member’.
